The one that keeps going in a power cut

Forty-four panels across a big stone roof, feeding a three-phase hybrid, wired with proper backup built in. Most batteries sit there doing nothing the moment the grid drops. This one runs through a UPS and EPS setup, so the site keeps working while the street waits for the lights to come back.

Making a new build's solar actually pay

New builds on the Brabazon development arrive with solar on the roof and nowhere to put what it makes, so a bright day mostly goes to the grid for pennies and comes back at teatime at full price. We added a second array on flat-roof frames, wired into the inverter that was already there, then AC coupled a battery to the whole lot.

AC coupling is the point of this one. It bolts a battery onto a system that already works instead of tearing out a perfectly good inverter, which on a house this new would be an expensive way to solve the wrong problem.

The tiles were coming off anyway

In-roof, because the timing made it cheaper

Sixteen panels across the north and south faces. The north roof was already due to be re-tiled, so instead of buying a roof full of tiles and then covering them over with panels, we set the panels into the roof on GSE trays. The array does the job the tiles would have done up there, and nobody paid twice for the same square metres.

A north-facing roof will always generate less than a south-facing one. It earned its place here because the tiles were coming off regardless, which is exactly the sort of thing worth working out before anyone decides where the panels go.

Two pitches, two angles, one system

The one the battery earns its keep on

Fifteen panels split across two faces of the roof, nine looking west at a 37 degree pitch and six south-west at 25. Different angles peak at different times, which spreads the generation across the day rather than piling it into one lunchtime lump the house cannot drink. Bird protection went on at the eaves before we left.
