Why Sunny's

The engineer who surveys your roof is part of the team that fits it.

  1. No sales visit

A satellite look, a written estimate, then one survey by an engineer. Nobody sits in your kitchen for two hours.

  2. Designed, not picked from a brochure

The layout is drawn around your roof's shape, shade and pitch, and your quote comes with an MCS performance estimate for that roof.

  3. Fitted by NICEIC-approved electricians

The people who design it are the people who wire it, and the same team answers the phone afterwards.

★★★★★

"An on site survey was followed by a detailed quotation and Dan kept us constantly updated with the G99 application and proposed install dates. The work was carried out brilliantly and we are over the moon with our new PV system."

On the roof and on the wall

Solar panel installation, done properly.

Photos from our own installs, from the first tile to the finished roof. Every system is designed for your roof from a proper survey.

  1. A tile being ground with an angle grinder on the scaffold so it sits flat over a roof hook

    Tiles notched, not cracked

Where a roof hook passes under a tile, the tile is ground to sit flat over it, so the roof stays watertight.

  2. Rows of aluminium mounting rails on roof hooks across a concrete tiled roof, before the panels go on

Hooks in the rafters, rails across

Each hook is screwed into a rafter, not a batten, and the rails run across them for the panels to clamp to.

  3. An installer in a sun hat kneeling on the roof, clamping a row of all-black panels to the rails

    Panels clamped to the rails

Set square and held just off the roof, so air flows underneath and keeps them cool.

  4. An electrician testing the connections on a wall-mounted inverter with an insulated screwdriver

Wired and tested by our own electricians

Every connection checked and the system tested to BS 7671 before it's switched on.

  5. An all-in-one inverter and battery unit fixed to a rendered outside wall, with its red and yellow isolator switch beside it

    Neat on the wall

Inverter and battery fixed square on an outside wall, with the isolator beside them, so it's tidy to live with and easy to service.

  6. A finished array of all-black panels on a clay tiled roof, seen from the scaffold

    The finished roof

All-black panels set square, with bird mesh round the edges so pigeons can't nest underneath.

Renusol rails and roof hooks, fixed into the rafters.
Inverter
A Fox ESS hybrid as standard, sized to your panels and ready for a solar battery; our prices are based on it. EcoFlow is our electricians' favourite to fit, with a 15-year warranty. It costs a little more, and we'll price both side by side.

Also included: scaffolding, bird mesh, the G98 or G99 grid paperwork, testing to BS 7671, your MCS certificate, the app set up on your phone, and deposit and workmanship protection through QANW.

Does my roof suit solar?

Will solar panels work on your roof?

Most roofs in Somerset do. South is best, but south-east, south-west and east-west roofs all work well. North-facing roofs rarely pay back, and we'll say so.

  • Shade

Chimneys, trees and dormers cast moving shadows. The survey maps them and the layout avoids them.

  • Roof type

Tiles and slate both take panels well. Tall, steep or fragile roofs get surveyed by drone.

  • Planning

Most homes don't need it. Listed buildings and some conservation areas do, and we check first.

  • The grid

Smaller systems need a G98 notification after fitting. Larger ones need G99 approval first, which we apply for.

East and west figures are for a roof with panels on both faces.

Start to finish

How a solar panel installation goes.

From a written estimate to switch-on, usually within a few weeks. The grid paperwork sets the pace.

    Kit, scaffold and approval

We order your kit and book the scaffold. Larger systems need G99 approval from the network operator first, which we apply for.

  4. 04Usually 1 to 3 days on site

    The install

Panels up, inverter in, everything tested to BS 7671. Dust sheets down, drive swept.

Electric car?

Home EV chargers, fitted with your panels.

We fit home EV chargers too, on the same visit if you like. A smart charger can top the car up from your panels on a sunny day, or from the grid on a cheap overnight rate.

Priced in your written estimate. It doesn't change the battery you need, because the battery is sized for the house.

Fair questions

Solar panel questions.

How many solar panels do I need?

Most homes we fit have between 7 and 18. It depends on your usage and how much roof you have. The calculator works it out from your bill.

How long does installation take?

Usually one to three days on site. The scaffold goes up a day or two before, so the install days are all panels and wiring.

Do I need planning permission?

Usually not. Listed buildings and some conservation areas do, and we check before you commit.

Can the panels go in the garden instead?

Yes, on a ground-mounted frame, if you have the space and a sunny spot clear of shade. The frame and the cable run back to the house add to the cost, so we price it after a survey.

Do solar panels work in winter?

Yes, on daylight rather than sunshine, but they make much less in December than in June. The figures we quote are yearly totals, grey days included.

What warranties do I get?

The panels are warrantied for 25 years. The inverter and any battery carry their maker's warranty: 10 years with Fox ESS, 15 with EcoFlow. Our workmanship and your deposit are protected through QANW.

Will I be paid for what I export?

Yes. With your MCS certificate you can sign up to a Smart Export Guarantee tariff with an energy supplier. Our figures use a guide 12p a unit.

Do you fit solar panels across Somerset?

Yes: Wells, Glastonbury, Frome, Bridgwater, Yeovil, Taunton and Bath. The same prices and the same team throughout.

What maintenance do they need?

Very little. Rain does most of the cleaning, and the app shows you if output drops. Panels under trees or near farms can need a clean, which we do. For anything else, see repairs and aftercare.
