Low output?
Is it a fault, or is it winter?
A solar system here makes about a quarter as much in December as it does in May. If your app looks alarming in winter, compare it with this before you worry.
Usually normal
Output dropping through autumn and winter, on grey weeks, or with snow on the panels.
Worth a call
Nothing at all on a bright day, an error or red light on the inverter, the app offline for days, or a month well below the same month last year.
Monthly pattern from the EU's PVGIS data for Wells, scaled to the 950kWh per kWp a year that our estimates use.
What we fix
The solar panel repairs we do most.
We find out what's actually wrong first. If it's worth fixing, we fix it. If it's healthy, we'll tell you to leave it alone.
-

Inverter faults and swaps
The inverter is the part that wears out first, usually well before the panels. We read the fault, repair it if that's worth doing, and swap it if not, ready for a battery if you want one later.
-

Pigeons under the panels
They nest in the gap under the array, and the mess and noise follow. We clear it out and fit mesh round the edges so they can't get back in.
-

Connectors and wiring
A loose or failing connector can stop a whole string of panels, or run hot. We test each string and replace what's failing.
Also: panel cleaning, tripped isolators and switches, apps that have stopped reporting, panels moved in a storm, and adding a battery to an older system.
Solar inspection
A solar inspection, in writing.
We inspect and test the whole system, panels to consumer unit, to BS 7671, and give you an EICR: what's safe, what needs attention and what can wait.
Worth having if you're buying or selling a house with solar, if your system has never been checked, or if the company that fitted it has gone.
What it covers
- The panels, fixings and cables we can see, and the roof around them
- Each string of panels tested, connectors checked
- The inverter, isolators and any battery
- The consumer unit, earthing and surge protection
- Output checked against what the system should make
- A written report, with any fixes priced before work starts
Orphaned systems
Taking on a system someone else fitted.
Plenty of early installers have gone, and their customers are left with nobody to ring. We'll take yours on.
Send us what you've got
Photos of the panels and the inverter, any paperwork, and a screenshot of your app if you have one.
We inspect and test it
A full inspection, with an EICR, so we know exactly what we're looking after.
A written report and a fixed price
What's fine, what needs fixing and what it costs, before any work. After that it's on our books: one number to ring for the life of the system.
Fair questions
Solar repair and maintenance questions.
My installer's gone bust. Can you take my system on?
Yes. We inspect and test it, put right anything unsafe, and from then on it's ours to look after.
Do solar panels need servicing?
Not on a schedule like a boiler. Panels rarely go wrong; it's usually the inverter, the wiring or the birds. An inspection every few years catches problems while they're small, and the app shows most faults in between.
Do you clean solar panels?
Yes. Rain keeps most panels clean, but ones under trees, near farms or on a shallow roof can build up dirt and droppings it won't shift. Send us a photo and we'll tell you whether yours need it.
My generation seems low. Is something wrong?
Maybe not. Output swings hugely with the season, so December always looks alarming. Compare it with the chart above, or send us your app's numbers and we'll tell you whether it's winter or a fault.
What is a solar EICR?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report for your solar system: a test of the whole installation against the wiring regulations, BS 7671, with a written report of anything that needs attention.
How long do inverters last?
Not as long as the panels. Most systems need a new inverter at some point in their life, and it's the most common repair we do.
Can you add a battery to my old system?
Usually, yes. A battery with its own inverter can be added to most systems without touching the panels. See solar batteries.
Do you work on any make?
Most. If a system is too old or too unusual to be worth repairing, we'll tell you before you spend anything.
Do you cover all of Somerset?
Yes: Wells, Glastonbury, Frome, Bridgwater, Yeovil, Taunton and Bath. The same team throughout.
